Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 80 and MAGGIE'S PLAN (2016)

This was my favorite Julianne Moore, Ethan Hawke is the charming deadbeat GOAT, and Gerwig is something else: she elevates well-crafted but dull into joyful.  Old Ben sensed the Bard's Athenian magic to be the bedrock, and what a perfect little tribute.  There is more wit and wisdom in A Midsummer Night's Dream than most NOVELISTs' careers, and here we see his lessons not lost just less, but that is quite alright, for we live longer less fraught lives.  Our sine waves shallow, but jumping at the same pace, out to infinity.

-in keeping with Petty, a lovely song from a hateable peer.

--do we have a more gifted wm vocal artist, with more subtlety in expression?  He breaks notes into ten or twelve parts.  And most of that talent is squandered.  But when it isn't...holy.

-----I'll always remember listening to this song daily, fall of sophomore year of college, midday, alone in the dorm room, not knowing what the fuck I was doing or going to do.

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 79 and LEMONADE (2016)

a. Always like her, never loved her.  Clearly a great voice, but previously her more "heartbroken" songs sounded a little plastic and hollow to me.  Like, who could really break Beyonce's heart?  *Maybe* bruise her ego, but that's it.  Now this lady reached some depths.

b. If she increases poetry sales, she is a saint.

c. I've had hot sauce in my bag swag for ~ 3 years.

d. It is pretty funny how much better it is than the Kanye album.   Like, this lady has vision and Ye has visions but only of the ritalin OD-variety.

e. I hope she and Frank would work together.  He has incredible ears but needs a little inspiration to stick to song craft/structure, and Ms. Knowles knows how to stick a landing.

-we have the best girls

--so chill

---best ever product of Florida

----nobody sets the table for a chorus as good as Tom

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 78 and GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

I'm really glad this movie exists.  They should remake all classic buddy movies with these four, maybe throw in Fey, Poehler, Schumer, Abbi and Ilana, Bamford, etc. when convenient.  I love the whole cast but I beg the universe to make Kat McKinnon the biggest star on the planet.  C'mon universe, do me a solid!

-Best Halloween dance song

---dude has no ego, NEVER wanted to be a rock-sex-god, just made the best americana we'll ever hear.

----how about Petty>>Costello shirts?  Eat a dick, Elvis!

-----ho hum, just another classic opening, you know what song it is a quartersecond in.

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 77 and THE LOBSTER (2016)

Funny, sad and wise film.  Found a moving allegory for how true love invents itself.  Reminds me spiritually of The Little Prince.  Ready-made for the double-screening with ANOMALISA in the future.

-A playlist just can't go this long with only 2 Petty songs!

--my style icon

---who knew Petty's music video game was so on point?

----how much pot has this beautiful man ingested?  Truly it is a gift from above, the results speak for themselves.

-----I assigned this one to Bieze in Girl Talk and stand by it.  Backbone is a replicative force, but life is long and it needs to be reaffirmed from time to time and this song is like 500 mg of spine.

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 76

-The Dixie Chicks played this last night as a tribute to Prince.  most elegant song in the last 25 years.

--I'd be down for the entire American Songbook covered by new wave bands.

----do you sometimes miss the smell of stale cigarette smoke?

-----If i had the power i would erase Hotel California from the cultural memory and replace it with this, it would be so.

-oh the wave of Bob to come.  and he's the world's best harmonica player, care to dispute?

-- Mekons' Last Dance is just about perfect

---best tribute to a fallen friend.  Joyful and mournful in equal measure.

----like Ian Curtis and Arthur Russell and Stephen Merritt's son

-----indie tries for yearning and ends up with whiny 99% of the time but Mr. Maus knows what he's doing.  He yearns, Jerry!

----i cannot defend this

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 72

-best white lady voice of the twentieth century there I said it.

--we are a blessed do you have pipes like that and still give the keys such lovely space to stretch out and set the table?  I love that restraint so much.  It's like when LeBron lets Kevin Love shoot the basketball.

---i'm telling you, hamster balls.

----We need to vault this stuff like the Svalbard Global Seed Vault

-----I love when the horns come in at the end. it sounds like they're on the other side of the football field, raising a fanfare for a sunny afternoon

----If you walked in a bar and they were playing Patsy, you'd stay until they stopped

----ahhhhh choral glory, but staying in the pocket.

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 70

-lady from Wye Oak has an awesome voice, writes terrific songs, deserves better.

--I sing this to myself maybe more regularly than any other song

---v. dumb thing to be proud of but I actually tell people I played chess tournaments in the cafeteria where elliott ate lunch.

----Shak III

-----how good were his ears??  he was Brian Wilson.  A barbershop quartet could do a lot worse than learning his songbook.  You'd probably make hella money busking in Portland.

Ten Thousand Favorite Songs, v. 69

Anybody watching Mr. Robot?

---suspenders fedora unstoppable obv

----GOAT newsie cap/hair combo

-----I feel like when I turn thirty next month, it will be time to finally get really into Steely Dan.

--after the Justified finale I listened to different versions of this so many times I learned all the words which almost never happens with me.
