Mario Vargas Llosa did the anti-imperialist world a good turn by resurrecting the story of this forgotten legend. One of the most influential figures in the shaming and eventual dismantling of the colonial system was this Irishman, knighted by the crown, and then hung as a traitor for attempting to smuggle arms to Irish nationalists prior to the Easter Uprising. Couldn't be much more heroic. Roger Casement got kicked in the ribs by life over and over and responded by only becoming braver and more resolutely human. Let a thousand Rogers bloom.
