this whole season felt like how Don woke up and got hungry in the finale. like coming out a daze and flexing whole new muscles. might be my favorite season so far. hard to put anything in front season 1 tho.
You'd put season 3 LAST? You're crazy. Show's gotten better every season, with the exception of season 2, which was still AWESOME, just not up to season 1 standard and certainly not what followed.
Top Five Season 5 Moments (off the top of my head)
5. Betty running through that big, creepy house, screaming for Henry. The show's best encapsulation of its own scope.
4. Don almost steps into an elevator shaft.
3. The entire scene in which Roger pays off Harry to let Pete take his office.
2. Don takes the needle off the record in the middle of The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows."
1. Peggy quits.
Honorable mention to every scene involving Michael Ginsberg or Joan Harris. Especially the latter; Christina Hendricks is the show's best supporting player, bar none. She makes everyone she plays against look good while still being better than them.
Totally agree. Turns out Joan was only supposed to be on the pilot, but she put so much into the character that she has superceded Peggy as the most compelling female character in a lot of ways. And Ginsberg is definitely the greatest introduced character yet. Worst? The terrible lesbian journalist in season 4. Straight up embarrassing. (also, David Mamet's daughter)
The other truly great moment was the Fourth of July shot outside the Francis house. Looked straight out of Tree of Life.
Season 3 did have the best finale, Grandpa fucking Gene, the John Deere incident, and Sterling in blackface, but it also had the go-nowhere Conrad Hilton stuff, more unnecessary flashbacks, and The Teacher (Don's worst mistress, like he wasn't even trying anymore).
Also, more pertinently, I've watched seasons 1 & 2 three times through, with the rest only once, so I am majorly biased and my opinion should be taken, as always, with rock salt, in those 50-lb bags they use to de-ice driveways.
Love the Conrad Hilton stuff. Don hits the basic moral on the head a little hard - that he's not an accounts guy, and kind of screwed the company by insisting on handling it himself - but it gave Don a taste of luxury and power that he might never get again. It also gave Don a father figure before the crushing disappointment that it was all business all along. It didn't "go anywhere," but it revealed a lot about Don.
Agreed that The Teacher was the worst mistress, but I loved her exit - stranded in the car as Betty confronts Don about his past - so much that I tend to remember mostly that.
