occulted magical realism.
DFW wants us to realize the power of our attention. he wants us to sit down and experience crushing boredom and endure it long enough that it transmutes to the sublime. dullness only hurts because in absence of excitement & entertainment, we're left with quiet to experience the ambient, chronic pain we're all in. if we can accept this, come to peace with it, we will be left with a superpower, the ability to focus our minds, to follow the modern mazes, solve puzzles that would ordinarily repel us with their crushing tedium.
the danger to our societal ADD is that it has robbed us learning to sit and wrestle the devil in the details. to unlock our true, levitating souls, reaching out to each other with angelic empathy.
