No one described the pathologies of the various phenotypes of pathetic male as accurately, beautifully, humorously and humanely as Denis Johnson  (rest in peace) and if you want to understand the aches and pains of the world, the varieties of shit-kicker American is who you most need to understand. I would *highly* recommend the audiobook-- Liev Schreiber, Dylan McDermott, Nick Offerman, Will Patton, and Michael MotherShaming Shannon bring their tremendous talents in as narrators/crumb bums.

THE LAND OF STEADY HABITS dir. Nicole Holofcener (2018)

A sequel to A Charlie Brown Christmas, in which the Peanuts gang has grown up to be emotionally vacuous, unhappy people in huge homes in Connecticut, and raise children whose trauma is witnessing that sort of worthlessness, and wondering if it's genetic, another miserable inheritance. Funny, poignant, damning.



The scene that has stuck with me was the exterior and interior at the dry dock, where recreational watercraft are stored so the wealthy don't have to maintain them. Charlie carries most of the expressed emotional weight of the film, trying desperately to get an adult to hear him, but they're wrapped up tight in white shrink-wrap, boats not doing what boats are made for.
