France pinned in, with fascism on both its borders. the danger of relishing rich cultural legacy is that we won't be ready for the brownshirts, those who can't yet comprehend their own anger, who might stoke and profit from it. oddly enough, we're called to be emissaries from the better world.

no one paints the wryness, the otherworldliness of true nobility better than Bolaño

occulted magical realism.

DFW wants us to realize the power of our attention. he wants us to sit down and experience crushing boredom and endure it long enough that it transmutes to the sublime. dullness only hurts because in absence of excitement & entertainment, we're left with quiet to experience the ambient, chronic pain we're all in. if we can accept this, come to peace with it, we will be left with a superpower, the ability to focus our minds, to follow the modern mazes, solve puzzles that would ordinarily repel us with their crushing tedium.

the danger to our societal ADD is that it has robbed us learning to sit and wrestle the devil in the details. to unlock our true, levitating souls, reaching out to each other with angelic empathy.
